Christmas Animation

Check out this lovely animation made by Rohan Wadham and the Catfish Collective, for Lapland UK.

Figures and the majority of illustrations were done by Caio Bracey and Helen Schroeder.

If you watch as far as the teddy bears, they're mine! So are a few other bits and bobs, but the teddy bears are my favourite. It's definitely a privilege to see my work contributing to an animation like this.

A is for Azathoth

I'm going to do a full series of drawings from H.P Lovecraft's "Cthulu mythos," an ABC of the genre. I started listening to some recordings of his books quite recently and thought they were a bit trashy but a lot of fun all the same, now I can't get enough!

M.R James and Algernon Blackwood are what drew my interest to "strange tales" but their terrors are subtle and best left unseen by the reader. Lovecraft on the overhand abounds with cavorting, otherworldly tentacles, who could resist!

Cats and the Sea

Here is a another sample of my bumbling progress into printmaking, it is a really quite an awful print! My goal at the moment is to do a little more actual printing and learn to make some nice impressions from the blocks; so much time is spent carving and learning to carve that at some point I forgot I would actually need to spend as much time if not more, learning to print.

Since the last print I showed, blue has obviously appeared, this is from the first colour block. I had registration issues which have been largely corrected by adding some tiny wedges of wood into the registration marks, or kento. This was what made this block interesting for me, and in the end very rewarding as I had previously though these adjustments probably a little beyond me. Now I must learn to banish the blotchyness!

I should mention that I have been finding solutions to my many problems in David Bull's wonderful ebook and support forum. If you are reading this because you are looking in to woodblock printing, you should get his ebook if you don't already have it, as it is excellent.

Woodblock print

I've been on a little printing spree over the past few months, some of which I have documented over at Islander Art.
This is my first full attempt at a woodblock print, I was so pleased with the block that the test print seems rather boring in comparison. This will be a colour print however, so there is alot more work to do.
